Parents

Just for Teens

Positive relationships. Personal Identity. Skills for Life. A bright future for teen parents and their children.

Outcomes

Just for Teens has demonstrated a positive impact on the teens’ individual development, while addressing important issues related to their new role as a parent, at the same time. Outcomes from the program include:

  • Increased confidence of teens as people and as parents
  • Increased academic achievement
  • 97.2% high school graduation rate among teen participants, more than double the national average for teen parents (based on five years of data from nine Buffalo Public School participants.)

Additionally, teens participating in the program receive valuable life skills, as well as parenting skills, which address key risk factors that contribute to child abuse and neglect: lack of parental confidence, isolation, and poor parent/child relationships.

Pregnant and parenting teens often need support to help them develop skills for parenting, and for life. Without these supports, they are more likely to drop out of school, and their children are at higher risk for child abuse and neglect. Just for Teens is designed to address these needs and provide teens with the skills and resources they need to empower them to build stable families, become confident parents, and to reach their full potential.

Just for TeensJust for Teens is currently in four Syracuse City School District high schools. The 20-session strength-based program addresses the needs of the participants both as teens, as well as parents, and is offered twice per year within the school.

The curriculum covers 24 topics in four main areas:

  • Fundamental Parenting Skills
  • Bonding with Your Child
  • Relationships
  • Personal Well-being

Just for Teens is offered in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. The program connects teens to services such as immunizations, WIC, women’s health issues, child care information, and community health services.
